An Under Vehicle Inspection (UVI) is an under vehicle scanning system which has an imaging system placed on a roadway. It is used to detect threats hidden under vehicles like bombs. They have cameras to capture under-vehicle images for the automated or manual inspection conducted by systems or security personnel.



In the late 1980s, the first under vehicle scanning system was developed as part of a joint operation by Morfax (which now belongs to Chemring Group) and UK Home Office. The system used area scan cameras and gave black and white images. Since then, the systems were developed with more advanced systems. For example, it was developed with the database in 1994, ANPR in 1997, color imagery in 2005, automated change detection in the year 1999, and chemical detection in the year 2012. Under vehicle inspection systems can be attached to the road (fixed), mobile, or embedded in the road (permanent).

What are the Best Uses of Under Vehicle Inspection Systems?

●       Law Enforcement – A lot of law enforcement agencies like police departments use UVI systems to enforce checkpoint of vehicles at parameters near sites of importance or critical infrastructure, such as major events happening in their area.

●       Aviation- UVIS system is used to detect vehicles entering the areas like tarmac which have access to aircraft directly.

●       Event Security – It has become really very vital. At leading public places like stadiums, security staff use UVIS to ensure the security of entry points that have direct access to the arena.

●       Military – UVIS is used by several military bases to scan the gates where commercial trucks pass through. They also use mobile systems at ingress routes and quick vehicle checkpoints for forwarding bases.

●       Nuclear Plants – They use UVIS at random checkpoints along with sally port entry in conserved areas.

●       Border Protection – Across the world, these groups implement UVIS to scan vehicles going through the borders.



Different actions are required in different situations. Perimeter security usually starts with guarded or gated entrance. These checkpoints have both in-ground and portable vehicle scanners. They are used as per their security needs. Situations often need portable, light, and mobile solutions which should be deployed smoothly, easily, and instantly. These systems are considered to be very portable, according to security experts.

Security checkpoints can be enforced at any time of the day. This way, the vehicle inspection system should be capable of providing proper scan lighting for the vehicles when installing at night time. They should also have proper monitors that can be seen in the daytime, full sun operations. They have smart lighting to provide better and wider viewing with proper lighting. They should be able to provide a clear and proper view during night or day. It consists of a sunlight readable monitor to give clear insight undercarriage.
